Web App Tells You If Robert Scoble Is In The Room

Web App Tells You If Robert Scoble Is In The Room

scoble-room

The best web app at SXSW Interactive this year was “Is Scoble In The Room?”, created by Tom Scott and Ewan Spence.

This is the ultimate killer app for SxSW Interactive, answering the question that all social media types constantly ask: is Tech Influencer Robert Scoble in this room right goddamn now?

It tracks Scoble’s location round-the-clock based on his online activity, then combines that with HTML5 geolocation to work out the likely distance from Scoble to Scoblefan.

Now, Social Media Consultants don’t even have to think! Not that they were thinking anyway.

First Look at Google Instant

First Look at Google Instant

Talk about instant! Google just rolled out Google Instant this morning. Now search results display as you type, bringing you results much faster.

To see it in action, go to Google.com and start typing. The search box then turns into the results page. And as you keep typing, the search results change, bringing you a step closer to what you were looking for. It’s pretty nifty! Note: not all users have this option available yet. It may take a few days before everyone sees the new feature.

Google Instant is a new search enhancement that shows results as you type. We are pushing the limits of our technology and infrastructure to help you get better search results, faster. Our key technical insight was that people type slowly, but read quickly, typically taking 300 milliseconds between keystrokes, but only 30 milliseconds (a tenth of the time!) to glance at another part of the page. This means that you can scan a results page while you type. (Google.com/instant)

Apple’s MobileMe

Apple’s MobileMe Mail gets a refresh for some reason

You still using MobileMe? So you haven’t been lured away by Google’s or Microsoft’s free offerings then? Ok, then you’ll probably notice that MobileMe looks a bit different today. Pictured above is the new MobileMe application switcher that now requires two clicks to do what previously took one (i.e., switch MobileMe applications). Looks pretty though. Mail is the biggest change with new widescreen (pictured above) and compact views, rules, single-click archiving, a formatting toolbar, and SSL all introduced in the beta last month. Huzzah?
